I just read a book about BTK The BTK Murders by Carlton Smith. It was pretty good, and what surprised me was that BTK really wasn't all that smart. His communications were full of grammatical and spelling errors, and he even made major grammatical errors when he spoke in court. At the same time, I know hindsight is always 20/20, but the wichita police department weren't always the smartest when dealing with him either. They suspected BTK of being in the criminal justice program at the local wichita college, which he actually was. I can't help but think if they'd made his communications public, someone would have recognized the criminal justice student with this horrible comprehension of the english language. It has been my experience that people who make a certain misspelling or grammatical error don't know the correct way to say what they want, and are therefore very prone to making those same mistakes repeatedly, and that is definitely something that someone close to him might have recognized. BTK was also not smart enough to realize that he was in over his head when it came to computers. He asked one of the detecives in a communication if computer discs could be traced, and the police answered back in a classified ad that they couldn't. So BTK sent them a CD-rom, which was traced to a computer that was obviously his, and there it was. Mr Rader was more than surprised when he found out that the detective had lied to him when he asked about the disk. What's scary is that if BTK had been even slightly intellegent, he might have gone uncaught. There is also an obvious connection between BTK and the zodiac killer's methods, and I find myself wondering if anyone with access to everything in the zodiac case has studied what we learned from BTK and applied it retroactively to that case. They even had the same fantasies.. Dennis Rader (BTK) mentioned that he'd have fantasies about his victims being his servants in the afterlife, and right around the time Zodiac started threatening to blow up school busses, he mentioned that exact same fantasy in one of his communications.
